Preparing the greens for winter
Today we will complete our preperation for the winter season. For our greens it is a two step process.
First step is spraying them with fungicide, to prevent snow mold, and a anti transparent to help protect the plant from drying out.
Our second step is applying a layer of sand, as shown below. This will assist in holding moisture near the crown of the plant. The sand will also protect the plant from direct extreme temperatures.
These two applications give us the best chance possible to have alive greens come spring.
The greens will still be open this weekend!!! Starting Monday please play the temporary green locations.
Thank You for another great golf season.

Winterizing the irrigation
Today we are blowing out/winterizing the irrigation system. We get most of the water out of the lines with the manual quick couplers, as shown below. We will then go through each zone to finish. Tomorrow morning we will blow out the well lines. Typically it will take us about 1.5-2 days to do the system and well lines.

New Equipment
We have purchased some new equipment. A greens mower and debris blower were delivered today. By purchasing now there was some great savings verse purchasing next spring.

First snow/ Weekend looks good
Here it is, the first measurable snowfall of the year. Nice picture for a Post card, no so good for Fall golf.
Fall
The photo below shows some I the new spruce trees we planted on the west side of the driving range. We are losing many of the popular trees in the area, the new trees should help keep that buffer zone between the driving range and hole 9.
The course is still open for play!! We will keep the golf course open as long as Mother Nature allows, exact date to be determined.
If you have any comments please feel free to email or text me

Collars and aprons
Today we are aerating collars and aprons on the front nine. After aerating we will top dress the aprons with sand. This will help control thatch and help keep these areas more playable.
As you may have noticed we have started to raise some of the heights of cut. This is normal for this time if year. Raising the height if cut allows the grass plant to store up more nutrients and energy going into the tough winter season.
Enjoy the Fall Season.

Venting Fairways
We are in the process of venting the fairways. The tine we are using is of the slicing style that goes to a depth of about 5". We will do 3-4 holes each day until done.
This process wil provide compaction relief and very minimal disruption to the playability.
If you have any questions feel free to contact me.

Air movement
During our visit from the USGA Agronomist, we talked about air movement around the 14 green to 15 blue tee area. He recommended some air tunnels cutting the under brush in 10-12' wide paths. Allowing the air flow should help improve the turf grass in these heavily wooded areas.
This is behind 14 green to 15 blue tee. No trees were removed just the lower under brush. We may do a few more air tunnels in this area.

Venting tees
Tuesday we vented tees using our aerovator style aerator. This is a solid tine unit that provides compaction relief and some minor leveling of the soil. Once mowed there will be very minimal effect on playability.
If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

Rain
Not sure when our last rain was but this morning the minimal precipitation was a nice surprise. It looks like under .1 of a inch, we will take whatever we can get!
The course has handled the extreme hot weather well, no major issues other than just extremely dry. I am hoping next week will get back to more normal like conditions.
Fall is coming, come out and enjoy your golf course.

Venting Greens
Today we are venting the greens with a solid needle tine. After venting we will top dress lightly with sand and then roll the greens in two different directions. When done this will have very little impact on Golf Course playability.

Greens
Today we did a light top dressing on the greens. We also hand spread extra sand in the thin areas on the greens, the areas where the fungus hit the hardest. The final step is rolling the sand into the turf grass canopy, this will provide a nice smooth putting surface.

Leak on #7
Here is Matt and Dustin. They are digging up an irrigation leak in the low area on 7 fairway. Most of our irrigation line are about 2' deep, this one was about 3'. Turned out to be an o-ring leaking in a coupler. Looks like we have it fixed for now.

Looking better!!
Here is a picture of #6 green. This is one of the greens that was hit the hardest by anthracnose. As you can see it is recovering pretty well. The areas that are still a lighter is the poa annua that the anthracnose attacked. If an area is real bad we have reseeded trying to establish some more bent grass.
Tomorrow we plan on applying liquid fertilizer. We are applying liquid fertilizer on a weekly basis to aid in the recovery. The liquid is absorbed through the leaf and made available to the plant almost immediately.
Also this week we will be applying a light top dressing to the greens. Once the sand dries we will roll in into the turf canopy. Top dressing smooths the putting surface and helps control thatch.
If you have any questions pleas feel free to contact me.
We will see you on the course!!

Top Dressing Greens
Today we are incorporating a light sand top dressing on the greens. This will help smooth the surface and keep the thatch under control.
After the sand is dry we will then roll the sand into the turf canopy.

Greens
As you can see in the picture the greens are still struggling with anthracnose.
We treated them Thursday June 6. This treatment would normally last 21 days, under these wet weather conditions it only lasted only about 7. We treated them again on Friday June 14.
This morning they are looking better than yesterday morning. We are planning on another treatment this week, the weather also looks like it is changing. This will give us a chance to dry the plant out a little during the day.
Like I stated in a previous post this will have very minimal effect on course playability. If you have any questions please feel free to call or email me.
